Managing radioactive material inventory for principal investigators
Who is this article for?
Administrators who manage radioactive material inventory for principal investigators.
Administrator permissions are required.
This article explains how radioactive material inventory is tracked, filtered, and managed within the system, including unit controls and precision settings.
1. RAM inventory management overview
The radioactive materials inventory tracks all radioactive material assigned to each principal investigator as it is received, used, decayed, disposed, sub‑vialed, or transferred.
Inventory can be added to a principal investigator’s account in two primary ways:
- Directly from the radioactive materials inventory screen, typically by system administrators or radiation safety officers.
- Through the order workflow, which is recommended for full traceability.
Once inventory is assigned to a principal investigator, it can be managed from the radioactive materials inventory interface.
2. Navigation and filtering
Administrators can access the radioactive materials page by navigating to data manager and selecting radioactive materials.
From this page, administrators can:
- Use the filter panel to search for inventory by isotope, principal investigator, permit, status, code, and other criteria.
- Toggle units between curies and becquerels using the unit toggle above the filters. This updates activity values throughout the table.
To control how many digits are shown for activity values, administrators can adjust the radioactive value precision setting.
Navigation: edit settings, rad, radioactive value precision.
This setting adjusts the number of decimal places displayed and helps match the organization’s preferred significant figures.
3. Example uses
3.1. Academia
A radiation safety officer searches for I‑125 vials assigned to a specific principal investigator before an inspection.
3.2. Manufacturing
A plant health physicist checks remaining activity in sealed Co‑60 sources.
3.3. Construction and industrial
A safety manager reviews Ir‑192 sources in the field before renewing a permit.
