Creating and managing waste containers in the Data Manager
Who is this article for?
System administrators who create and manage waste containers in the Data Manager.
Administrative access is required to create waste containers.
After container types are configured, administrators can create individual waste containers for use in radioactive and general waste workflows.
1. Create a new waste container
Click Data Manager, then click Waste, then select Create New Container.
In the Create New Container window, configure the following fields:
1.1. Container identification
- Container type – Choose from the container types created under Data Manager → Waste → Container Types.
- Waste type – Selected from the options allowed by the chosen container type.
- Container number – Unique identifier for the container. If left blank, the system generates a number using the facility code and an internal sequence.

Click Edit Settings, then click Waste, then select Allow Duplicate Container Numbers.
1.3. Ownership and location
- Container owner – The PI or owner responsible for the container.
- Container location – The physical location of the container.

The location dropdown shows rooms belonging to the PI and/or rooms defined as radiation waste storage locations.
Click Edit Settings, then click RAD, then select Radiation Waste Storage Locations.
1.5. Container permissions
- Allow parent container – Indicates whether this container can hold other containers.
- Public container – If enabled, other PIs can dispose into this container.
1.6. Control visibility of public containers
Click Edit Settings, then click Waste, then select Show Public Containers for RAM Disposal.
If this setting is set to No, public containers remain hidden from other PIs even if the container itself is marked as public.
1.7. Container measurements
- Container weight – Current weight of the container (useful for pickups and shipment records).
- Container volume – Capacity or filled volume.
1.8. DOT labels
- DOT labels – Associate DOT classification labels.
1.9. Configure DOT labels
Click Edit Settings, then click Waste, then select Waste DOT Labels. Add a label and description using Add New, or edit existing labels using the pencil icon.
1.10. EPA codes

1.11. Configure EPA codes
Click Edit Settings, then click Waste, then select Waste EPA Codes. Add a code and description using Add New, or edit existing codes using the pencil icon.
1.12. Notes
- Notes – Any additional information.
1.13. Container status
The status indicates where the container is in the waste lifecycle:
- Lab – Active in the PI’s lab and accepting waste.
- Storage – Removed from the lab and placed in a waste storage location.
- Disposed – Final disposal completed and shipped off‑site.
- Archive – Disabled; not part of the active workflow.
