Managing final waste disposal and shipment of stored radioactive waste containers

System administrators who manage final waste disposal and shipment of stored radioactive waste containers.
System administration access is required.
The final step in the waste lifecycle is to move stored containers through disposal or shipment. This may include decay-in-storage, drain disposal, or shipment to an external waste vendor.
1. Access disposal and shipment
To access disposal and shipment: Click Data Manager, then click Waste, then select Disposal and Shipment.
From this page, the RSO can:
- Use filters to find disposal records and shipments.
- Click New Waste Disposal to initiate a new shipment.
2. Create a new waste disposal record
Click New Waste Disposal to open the disposal window.
2.1. Shipment details
- Shipment date – Date of the planned shipment.
- Disposal method – How the waste will be disposed.
2.2. Configure disposal methods
Disposal methods are configured by clicking Edit Settings, then clicking RAD, then selecting Radiation Waste Disposal Methods.
- Add a method by entering a description and clicking + Add.
- Optionally assign a code.
- Set method status to Active or Inactive.
2.3. Shipment metadata
- Status – Controls the stage of the shipment. Must be set to Shipped to finalize.
- Manifest number – Manifest ID for the shipment.
- Shipping name – Required shipping name for regulatory paperwork.
- EPA ID number – ID for the shipping or receiving facility, if required.
- Attachments – Upload manifests, vendor paperwork, or regulatory forms.
3. Add waste containers to the shipment
Use the dropdown to add containers to the shipment.
- Only containers with a status of Storage are eligible.
3.1. Actions for each added container
- View more container details
- Remove (red trash icon)
- Perform a survey if needed
4. Finalize the disposal or shipment
When the disposal is ready, change the Status to Shipped to complete the workflow.
Note: Upon this status change, the disposed isotope activity is added back to the license limit.
