Using the scanner (barcode) function
Who is this article for?
Users who need to work with scanned items.
No special access or permissions are required.
The Scanner tool allows you to quickly locate and manage container records by scanning their barcode labels using your device's onboard camera, streamlining tasks like reconciliation, testing, transfers, and disposals.
1. Launching the scanner
To launch the scanner, follow these steps:
- From the Chemical Inventory Dashboard, click the Scanner icon located next to the main search bar.
- In the Scan Inventory window, click Start Scan.
- When prompted, allow your browser to access your device's camera.
- Position the container's barcode within the camera's view.
The system will capture and list the barcode as a scanned item.
Tip: To scan multiple items without the scanner turning off, use the drop-down menu and select Multiple Codes. If scanning just one item, select Single Code.
2. Working with scanned items
Once containers are scanned, they appear in a list within the Scan Inventory window. From here, you can apply bulk actions to all selected containers at once.
Available bulk actions include:
- Bulk Test – initiates the chemical testing workflow for time-sensitive chemicals (see the Chemical Testing section)
- Bulk Dispose – opens the disposal workflow to mark the selected containers for disposal
- Bulk Transfer – opens the transfer window, allowing you to reassign ownership or location for multiple containers at once (see the Chemical Transfer section)
- Bulk Edit – opens the bulk edit window, enabling updates to data fields across all selected container records
3. Example use cases
- Research labs can scan several containers at the end of a semester and bulk mark them for disposal
- Manufacturing teams can scan all containers in a production area to bulk edit their storage codes
- EH&S staff can scan ageing peroxide-forming chemicals and trigger bulk testing workflows during safety inspections
