Enabling storage codes
Who is this article for?
Administrators who want to learn how to enable storage codes.
Administrator permissions are required.
The Storage Code Labeling feature in the Chemical Management System (CMS) allows you to create and manage standardised storage codes with clear, descriptive labels that ensure chemicals are stored, labelled, and reported consistently across your organisation—supporting regulatory compliance, hazard segregation, and inspection efficiency.
1. Understanding storage code benefits
Storage codes provide significant advantages across different industries:
| Industry | Description |
|---|---|
| Academia | Assigns codes for flammable solvents, corrosives, and compressed gases to simplify lab inspections and reinforce safety compliance. |
| Manufacturing | Applies consistent codes for acids, bases, and oxidisers to ensure proper segregation and reduce cross‑contamination risk. |
| Construction | Labels adhesives, sealants, and fuels by hazard category to support jobsite hazard communication and compliance plans. |
| Industrial research and development | Uses unique codes for high‑value or restricted speciality chemicals to enhance tracking across multiple labs or facilities. |
2. Enabling storage code labeling
To activate the storage code feature, follow these steps:
- Go to Edit Settings.
- Select Chemical Inventory.
- Choose Chemical Inventory Storage Code.
- Select Turn On.
Once enabled, a Storage Code field will appear within container records, allowing chemicals to be assigned a predefined code.
3. Allowing general users to edit storage codes
By default, only administrators can edit storage codes within container records. You can optionally grant this ability to general users (such as lab managers or supervisors) for greater operational flexibility.
To enable general user editing, follow these steps:
- Go to Edit Settings.
- Select Chemical Inventory.
- Choose Edit Chemical Inventory Storage Code (General User).
- Select True.
Note: Allowing general users to modify storage codes can improve workflow efficiency, but it should be reserved for trained personnel to maintain data consistency.
