Managing a chemical of concern
Who is this article for?
Users responsible for chemical management.
Standard role and PI module role are required.
When a container linked to a flagged chemical is added to a Principal Investigator's (PI’s) inventory, the system checks it against a Chemicals of Concern list, disables all container actions, and redirects the PI to complete the necessary documentation.
This article explains how to get approval to manage a chemical flagged this way.
1. Managing a chemical of concern
To manage a flagged chemical:
- Go to Chemical Inventory.
- Click Start in the compound row.
This will temporarily disable all other container management functions.
The button will only appear if the compound requires a permit.
- Click New Application.
- Follow the pre-defined approval process.
Once the permit is approved, you will gain full access to manage the associated chemical.
Example
Academia - Require permits for high-toxicity research chemicals (e.g., cyanides) before graduate student access.
Manufacturing - Flag explosives or unstable reactives for specialized handling permits.
Construction - Require permits for high-VOC sealants or coatings exceeding environmental thresholds.
Industry - Apply permits to DHS “Chemicals of Interest” or materials with security restrictions.
